How To Backup And Restore WhatsApp Chats or Data


It is very painful to lose your whatsapp chats or data due to lack of backup before uninstalling your WhatsApp or changing your mobile phone.


Backing up WhatsApp chats or data is important if you don't want to lose your important chat messages or files you received.


In this post, I had made it easier for even a 2years old to understand, lol. You will learn the very easy steps to backup your WhatsApp chats.


How To Backup WhatsApp Chats Or Data


  • Launch your WhatsApp
  • Tap the menu

  • Click on Settings

  • Click on Chats

  • Then click on Chat Backup

  • You can tap BACK UP to create an immediate backup.
    You can also tap Back up to Google Drive to set a backup frequency.
    If you don't have a Google account already set up, tap Add account when prompted. If you have google account already set up, then continue and tap Backup

  • You can choose to download backup through WiFi or Cellular

  • If you want to include video in the backup, then tick the Include videos box

  • Finally, you can tap Backup and immediately the Backup will start.

That is how to backup WhatsApp chats and files.


How To Restore WhatsApp Backup Chats Or Data

Now let's see how to restore the backup. You have just downloaded the backup in the steps above and now you want to restore it on your new Android phone or you want to restore it after you might have uninstalled and reinstall WhatsApp.


To restore your backup is as easy as ABC. Lol.


  • Download and install WhatsApp
  • Download and install ES File Explorer File Manager if you don't have any File Manager on your android.
  • Now let us locate the backup file you downloaded on whatsapp earlier. Open your android file manager then open WhatsApp folder.

  • Open the Databases folder. You will find your backup(s) there.

  • Rename the recent backup name in case you have more than one (1) backup. For example, if the backup filename is msgstore-.1.db.crypt12 just rename it to something you can remember like current-msgstore.1.db.crypt12

  • Launch the WhatsApp you just downloaded then fill in your mobile number just like you did when you were registering on your WhatsApp before.
  • After putting your mobile number there, just click on Next and WhatsApp will automatically look for the backup file on your phone.
  • Finally, click Restore and wait while it finishes restoring.

Wow, you have just downloaded and restored your WhatsApp backup. You can now continue your chat from where you left.
